Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, could stop Republican senators' bid to issue a subpoena related to Hunter Biden's work for a Ukrainian energy company, The Washington Post is reporting.

Romney has said an investigation by the Senate Homeland Security Committee of Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, "appears political" in nature.

Committee chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wis., has called for a vote next week on a subpoena for testimony from former Ukrainian embassy official Andrii Telizhenko, who was a consultant for the firm that the energy company in question, Burisma Holdings, hired when facing accusations of corruption.

Romney is a member of the panel, which has an 8-6 Republican majority. If he sides with the six Democrats, it would deadlock the committee vote at 7-7 and prevent the subpoena from being issued, the Post noted.

During the Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, Romney broke ranks and voted to convict him on one of the two charges.

Republicans have been investigating Burisma and Hunter Biden for months to try to determine whether his former position on the company's board created a conflict of interest for Joe Biden, who was then vice president.
