Assam is targeting 6,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 as part of an ambitious plan to make clean energy a key driver of the state's future economic growth, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.
Sarma, in a post on X on Monday, said green energy would be at the heart of Assam's "next growth story", underlining the state government's focus on expanding renewable power generation while strengthening energy security.
"Green energy will be at the heart of Assam's next growth story. With 6,000 MW of renewable energy targeted by 2030, we are laying the foundation for a cleaner and more energy secure Assam," the Chief Minister said.
The target assumes significance as Assam seeks to meet rising electricity demand linked to industrial expansion, infrastructure development and urbanisation. Increasing the share of renewable energy could also help the state diversify its power mix and reduce dependence on conventional sources over the longer term.
Assam has considerable potential for renewable energy, particularly solar power, given the availability of land and favourable climatic conditions in several parts of the state. The government has been seeking greater private and public investment in clean energy projects as part of its broader development strategy.
The renewable energy push also comes amid a wider national effort to expand non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation and reduce carbon emissions. For Assam, the planned expansion could support the state's emerging industrial and investment landscape by improving the availability of reliable power while creating opportunities in clean-energy infrastructure, manufacturing and allied sectors. The state government has also been emphasising infrastructure development and attracting large investments in sectors ranging from manufacturing and energy to logistics and technology.
Achieving the 6,000 MW target by 2030, however, would require substantial investment in generation capacity, transmission infrastructure, land availability and grid integration.
The Chief Minister's announcement signals that renewable energy is increasingly being positioned not only as an environmental priority but also as an important component of Assam's economic and infrastructure strategy.
The state will need coordinated efforts involving government agencies, power utilities and private investors to translate the target into operational renewable energy capacity over the coming years.
